LASER Dentistry FAQs
Laser dentistry has revolutionlised all aspects of dental treatment
since inception, several companies have developed the wavelengths to
interact efficiently with dental tissues.
What is a laser?
(Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). Quite simply
a laser is a beam of light that has only one wavelength. This light is
not radioactive and is extremely safe to use.
How does laser work in teeth?
The laser works by exciting water particles in a beam that react with
and super charges water particles in dental tissues at an anatomic level.
What about temperature on the surface?
The temperature on the surface on which lasers work are actually 2°C
cooler than the original temperature. Unlike the dental drill, no
heating of the tissue occurs.
Why is it important not to heat teeth or gums?
By not heating the tissues, the laser can treat disease and not cause a
painful reaction during treatment. This means that after a procedure,
the patient is much more comfortable.
Can you treat without anaesthetics or shots?
In many cases, we do not need to administer injections, this is because
the reaction to laser is much lower then that of conventional dental
instruments. Often, a patient will feel coldness on the tooth. In fact,
low level laser fired onto a tooth can almost numb the tooth, it has a
great analgesic effect which makes procedures quite comfortable without
the use of anaesthetics.
What control does the dentist have when using the laser?
The dentist has total control they can adjust the laser to a specific
task. At Sydney Laser Dentistry we only use the minimum amount of energy
required to complete a procedure. Using high powered magnification, like
the microscope, our dentists can accurately heal diseased tissue without
weakening the surrounding tissue. We have much more control than in used
conventional methods.
Is it true that fillings may be much smaller using lasers?
Yes, lasers work at a much smaller level than drills, and they allow
much better vision of the treatment. This means that only diseased
tissues are removed, allowing the tooth to maintain as much strength and
integrity as possible.
Is a laser faster?
Sometimes, the laser is faster because there is no need for anaesthesia.
However, the laser at Sydney Laser Dentistry was chosen more
specifically for its accuracy, so that we can provide you with the
highest quality of dentistry.
